Singapore job hunters looking for higher salaries

Jobseekers need to be more responsible in their job search process, says Steven Seek, managing director of JobsDB.com.

With an influx of jobseekers in the Singapore market after the current festivities period, Seek says they are now looking for higher remuneration and benefits in their new job. “They may also be motivated to seek work in industries that they are passionate about, and also apply for jobs which can match their career aspirations and provide them with long term career development opportunities as well,” Seek adds.

These reasons differ from last year’s jobseekers, where the need to meet their basic needs and a stable income was their biggest motivation for changing jobs.

However, Seek says that jobseekers need to be responsible in their job search as well. Some of the complaints he has heard includes jobseekers who fail to show up at job interviews without informing the prospective employer in advance.

Other times, jobseekers also leave the company after a short period of time, Seek adds. “They don’t give themselves and the hiring company a full chance to see if there will be a successful job match between themselves and their new employer.”

But Seek also provides several handy tips for employees looking to change jobs:

  • In today’s competitive job market, jobseekers should continue to upgrade their skills so that they can stay ahead in their job hunt, remain relevant and easily adapt to the constantly changing work environment.
  • Jobseekers should also adopt a more holistic approach in their job hunt and not always just focus on working for a company that pays a higher salary. It’s important to factor in whether the company provides opportunities for career advancement, and whether your personal values and the company’s are in sync, or else it will be difficult for you to fit in with the company’s corporate culture and practices.
  • Jobseekers should also be proactive in their job hunt by attending job fairs, networking with friends and business associates who can share job opportunities with them, and by using both online and print mediums for job searches.
