Recently Lumesse, a talent management company, conducted a survey of 4,000 employees in 14 countries worldwide. The intent was to gauge employee attitudes to their jobs, workplaces and employers.
People working in Singapore scored amongst the lowest in several areas:
- 19% of Singapore employees polled look forward to their work each day, compared to the global average of 30%. Globally, 76% of people said they enjoyed their work every day or most days - but there was a lot of variation across countries
- In Singapore only 17% of staff don’t plan to leave their employer. The global average is 35%
- Only 12% of people polled in Singapore think that their workplace environment is positive and supportive
Research done by The Singapore Human Resource Institute, highlights the following as the top 5 reasons why employees in Singapore are unhappy with their employer/job and consequently leave:
- Unsure of career progress
- Lack of career opportunity
- Achievement not recognised
- Lack of learning opportunity, challenge in the job and expertise not valued
- Dissatisfied with the boss
I think that many of these problems aren’t that hard to fix.
It is common sense and everyone knows/understands that people make an organisation. Happy and loyal employees are a company’s biggest asset. They are loyal and the quality of their work is the same as it would be, if they owned the company.
However very few organisations, globally and in Singapore, actually take any REAL action, to invest in this asset and gain significant long-term returns.
Why? I just don’t get it….
