10 Jobs In Singapore With High Demand For Candidates, And Not Enough Supply

ManpowerGroup recently surveyed over 38,000 employers across 42 countries and territories for their annual Talent Shortage Survey.

Worldwide, 35% of people surveyed report they are experiencing difficulty filling jobs due to lack of available talent. This represents a slight rise in comparison to the 2012 survey and is the highest proportion of employers expressing concern about talent shortages since 2007.

These are top 10 jobs in Singapore for which employers cannot find suitable candidates:

  1. Secretaries, PAs, Administrative Assistants & Office Support
  2. Supervisors
  3. Labourers
  4. Drivers
  5. Sales Representatives
  6. Engineers
  7. IT Staff
  8. Skilled Trades
  9. Accounting & Finance
  10. Teachers

As for the reasons behind the difficulty in filling these jobs in Singapore/Asia, the most commons ones are lack of technical skills, dearth of job applicants and lack of relevant experience.

Keeping this in mind, here are some quick tips for people targeting these jobs in Singapore:

  1. Upgrade your technical and soft skills. Do enough research to know which skills employers want and which method/courses they value for acquiring such skills.
  2. Make enough of an effort to seek out potential employers/jobs using job sites, physical networking and online networking.
  3. Be aware of salary negotiation best practices during your job search.

    I have 3 years of experience as an Assistant Logistics and Export Manager, Currently residing in Delhi.

    I am planning to pursue Msc in Supply Chain Management from Singapore Institute of Management, I will be getting a degree from University of Warwick.

    I will be looking for a procurement job in Singapore after completion of my course.

    Is it a good decision to get the degree from SIM?

    I am currently pursuing CA from in India and have completed B.Com (H) from Delhi University.

    I have more than 2 years of work experience (Excluding 3.5 Years of internship required for CA) working with various CA firms and have done quite a lot of work.

    However, there is a problem which I can foresee. Everything I have worked on is based on Indian Laws and regulations.

    How would you suggest I proceed with getting myself a good job in Singapore. (I’ve got some relatives there who can help out with stuff in the beginning)

      In this survey, ‘skilled trades’ refers to a broad range of job titles that require workers to possess specialised skills, traditionally learned over a period of time as an apprentice. Examples of ‘skilled trades’ jobs include: electricians, carpenters, cabinet makers, masons/bricklayers, plumbers and welders.

  32. Whenever I want to apply for a position in IT in Singapore, it hinders me when only Singaporean and PR are needed to apply is indicated. I hope Singapore will open again its door to foreign talents to fill that gap. They are many who wants to be employed there, even some are overqualified to the extent.

    1. Hi Cince,

      There are many jobs for which foreigners are eligible as well. What you can do is to use advanced search parameters on the job sites, to exclude the words PR/Citizen. That way you won’t waste time going through irrelevant roles. Also if a job which asks for only OR/Citizens is advertised for a while, then it can be OK to apply as well, since it might mean that the company cannot find suitable candidates.
