For another year in a row, Singapore ranked as the best city for Asian expatriates to live. Other cities like Hong Kong have lost some appeal. But year after year Singapore remains on top, the latest study from ECA International reported.
After polling more than 450 locations across the world, the study looked at a number of factors to assess quality of living for expatriates. This included climate, housing, utilities, the availability of health care services and more.
Australian cities Adelaide and Sydney are in second and third place worldwide.
The regional director of ECA International’s Asia division, Lee Quane complimented Singapore on it’s air quality, medical facilities, strong infrastructure, and low crime rate, citing these factors as reasons the island nation topped the list.
Hong Kong dropped significantly this year to 33rd place globally from it’s hold at 17 last year. Although Hong Kong has good infrastructure, education, and an abundant availability of services, Quane said that the air quality is extremely poor in Hong Kong compared to places like Singapore. Thus it’s ranking drop.
The study is a bit complex and takes into account where a person is coming from. So for example, while Singapore is the top spot for people coming from Asia to go, it ranks 96th globally for an expatriate coming from Western Europe. For European expats, Bern and Copenhagen are the most liveable places. While, someone expatriating from North America will find it easiest to adapt to living and working in a place like Dublin.
