Many people miss out on the CRUCIAL step of doing keyword research when making their website. When I built my first website I did as well and paid dearly for the mistake.
Here’s the deal:
- You have a business venture and want to make a website to represent that venture online.
- You hope that once your website is up-and-running people will visit and ideally these people will buy something that you are selling and/or make you money in some way.
- But for people to visit your website, they need to find it first.
- On the internet, people find websites by entering certain words in a search engine (most commonly Google).
- If you’re website shows up amongst the list of sites that appear on the first few pages of search results, then people might click and pay you a visit.
- You can increase your chances of showing up on the first few pages (and ideally the first page) of search results, by knowing what words (i.e. keywords) people are actually typing into Google, to search for companies/services like yours.
- If you find and use the right keywords, you can have a flood of visitors. If you pick the wrong keywords, or don’t pay attention to keyword research at all, your website will be very lonely.
- Once you know which keywords are used most often and are the most lucrative, you can structure/optimise your website and marketing, to take advantage of these insights. This includes the you domain name you pick, the pages you include on your website, the information contained on those pages, how you market your business online and so on.
As you can see, keyword research is the foundation for a successful website . I didn’t know anything about it (literally) when I was making my first website. As a result, I lost out on a lot of visitors and money. I made big changes to that website once I learnt the importance of keyword research, which improved things substantially. However, there were many things I couldn’t change because it was too late. Don’t let that happen to you.
